#Harvey2017

Hurricane Harvey has been ripping through Texas causing mass devastation to everything in its path, especially the country’s fourth largest city, Houston. The constant storms from Harvey have created terrifying floods that have turned the city into an inhabitable, danger zone. Streets are now rivers, roofs of houses are just poking above the water, and many people have become trapped.

The Coast Guard has been rescuing people who could not evacuate before the floods, and some brave residents from surrounding areas have taken the initiative to load up in their own boats and travel to Houston to try to save their fellow Texans.

It is inspiring to see so many people coming together to help Houston in their state of emergency. People across the country are all finding their own way to lend support. Some are donating food, water, clothing, and other necessities to relief organizations set up to help those effected by Hurricane Harvey. President Trump has been boasting in his tweets about the teamwork that all levels of government have displayed in getting Houston the aid it needs.

And people everywhere have taken to social media to show their empathy and love for the people suffering in Texas. Social Media has been a connecting strength during this natural disaster. Since the category 4 hurricane hit Houston on Friday social networks have not only been a place for updated information on the damage, but also a place for people to come together to show their support and voice their compassion for Texas. #Harvey2017 is trending on Twitter, and many people have taken to social media to encourage people to donate to the Red Cross and send their prayers to Texas.

This is not the first time that social media has been a platform for its users to speak up during disasters. When Manchester Arena was bombed during Ariana Grande’s concert killing 23 and injuring over 250, people also took to social media to post about their sorrow for the people in Manchester.

#Harvey2017 and #PrayforManchester both prove that posts of compassion on social media are now the new norm when it comes to people wanting to voice their support for areas affected by disaster. With the constant controversy and bickering that happens on social media every day, it is extremely refreshing to see posts about solidarity and love. I find it very moving to be scrolling through my social media and to see people from all around the world collectively praying for the wellbeing of people they do not even know.
